water in cylinder

Hey ya'll, still new to this N thing. My post is similar to the "I've struck water" post. I have water pumping out of the #2 cylinder with all plugs out. My question is, would I need to perform a compression test and a leak down test before I tear the engine down? Would it help to find a cracked head or block without inspecting at teardown? Thanks

A compression test is a good idea and it could help to do cylinder leakage since the plugs are out anyway. Don't rely on your eyes to find cracks if you suspect that possibility. Have it Magnafluxed or get a dye penetrant test kit and see for yourself. I always check my heads for out of flat since I got burned years ago. Use a straightedge(about $90.00) or have a machine shop do it. Either way it's money well spent. Gerard

You all are really great!!! Blown head gasket was the only problem. A 1/2 day of cleaning and tear down, picked up a gasket kit, replaced head after it checked true. Re-torqued head today, more cleaning, new fluids, new plug wires and plugs, and got to fininsh bushhogging my 4 acres before dark. Total time in repair..... 9 hours.

Oh, you might mention to be sure to get the o-ring perfectly in place and the cover torqued down good BEFORE staring the engine...Don't ask me why I say this....
