water in oil

farmall 100 c-123 how can water/coolant get in the oil pan besides blown headgasket ? the radiator is empty, dont want to miss anything before I remove head.Thanks Tuckaway

I'd drop the oil pan before doing the head. Then fill the cooling system back up and have a piece of cardboard under it. Good chance a sleeve seal has gone bad or a sleeve cracked. It should be a wet sleeve engine so a sleeve seal is a common cause of that

Plus it is the simplest and cheapest thing to try first.

When you do this turn the engine so none of the bottoms of the pistons are at the bottom of the sleeve. Then you will have a better chance of seeing if the leaking coolant is coming down past the pistons or if it is coming from between the sleeve and block at the bottom.

If it turns out that it is a minor leak at a O-ring seal, some block sealer might fix the problem.

I've had water in the oil twice in C-123 engines. One was a blown head gasket, the other a sleeve seal (#2 cycl). I would drop the pan, fill the radiator, and apply 5 psig air pressure to the radiator and look for seal leaks. If a seal leaks, I would no an in frame restore and have the head machined (and new gasket). If no seal leak, pull the head and have it machined and tested (valves etc and new gasket).
