Hello all. I have been reading here for a long time and have great respect for all the knowledge shown here. I own 9N141273 which seems to be a 1940 9N. The last time I ran it I could hear a clinking sound coming from the engine area. When I parked it I found I could wiggle the fan and pulley quite a bit and saw a drop of coolant fall. So I am assuming the water pump needs replaced.
I have a service manual which gives the following steps.
Remove steering wheel. Is this necessary if 2 people lift the hood off. Also does it require a special puller.
Remove battery. Remove gasoline line.
Remove bolts holding hood in place. I find the dash bolts easily enough but have not found the front ones.
Lift hood off. Drain cooling system. Remove radiator. Loosen fan belt. Remove fan..
Remove water pump.
Have I missed anything so far? I am not really mechanical minded but do attempt some jobs. I have a friend that is a pretty good mechanic and he will probably help me.
Also, is this site the best place to buy a water pump?
Thanks in advance for all comments and help.

Not necessary to remove hood. Remove fan - 4 bolts. Slide fan forward to rest in the shroud. Loosen and remove fan belt. Remove water pump.

hi marv, and welcome :)

if memory serves me, the steering wheel is a much bigger pain when u go to put the hood back on than when u remove it.

don't worry about the front hood bolts. remove the single bolt at the bottom of each dogleg (the side pieces,) and they, the grill, and the hood/gas tank come off as a single unit. remember to watch the sediment bowl while you're moving it all around. also, if u have headlights, be sure to disconnect the wiring to them first.

 dangit, harold - too bad u didn't make that post 10 minutes earlier

Powerstroker,First your SN 9N141273 show that you have is a 1944 2N.
You can change the pump without removing the hood as HCooke said or go through a lot more work and remove the steering wheel hood, and radiator/shroud,and fan to make things easy to get to.

Powerstroker,You ask is this site the best place to buy a new pump?
It
Yes it is and it also helps support this great site.

I have replaced water pumps on 8n's without removing the hood. On the 9n and 2n. The hood will not come off without first removing the steering wheel.
