I suspect the acorn nuts were used to stop oil from sneaking past the threads and past the nuts.

Common nuts with a little thread sealant should accomplish the same thin, IMHO.
 
The correct nut is a very TALL nut, like double the height of a regular nut. This was so they stayed tight and didn't loosen under heavy use.

Exactly; I don't recall seeing acorn nuts there.
