WD-45 transmission problems

Hello fellows.

Have a 45 that 3rd gear started to pop out of it.

I limped it by all winter by not using 3rd, but now that its finally thawed outside I decided to pop the shifter off and see what was going on down there.

Looks like the 3rd gear splines are toast.

I would like to sell this tractor and get a D-17 and put my loader on that one, but this 45 aint gonna sell if 3rd is gone.

I guess I need to know how much it would take to fix the 45 tranny, or should I just swap and call it a WD with a 45 engine.

What would you guys do??

If you have a WD, before serial number 127008, it has a different transmission...the straight-cut gears. You could interchange the rear ends, but you would not have a WD45. Honesty is the best policy- sell it as it is with the bad gear, or fix it. Call dealers and salvage yards for parts prices.

To be honest, I would rather have a WD with a WD45 engine than the other way around. I own several WD/WD45s, and the straight cut WD has a stronger transmission. It has more surface area and runs cooler than the helical gears do. The drawback is they are noisy and tend to grind when shifting but stay put when in gear. WD45 shifters move when put under a load because helical teeth are at an angle and push away from eachother when in motion which also creates heat and excess wear.

Yes it is the older transmission with the straight cut gears.

I have tried to sell the tractor as is but everyone who has shown interest backs away from it like it is covered in radioactive fallout when I tell them about the transmission issue.

From what it cost last year for parts to repair my head on my WD, ie head studs and gasket set, I would really hate to see what new gears would cost.
