WD hydraulics

On the WD, does the hydraulic fluid also lubricate the transmission? Somewhere I read that it does, and that you should be careful about the size of hydraulic cylinders you use so that you don't pump out too much fluid and leave the transmission dry. But my WD service manual lists a transmission lubricant capacity of 17 quarts and a hydraulic fluid capacity of 6 quarts which makes me think they are separate. I know my transmission leaks a bit and I was wondering whether that might also be losing my hydraulic fluid.

The differential, transmission, wet clutch and PTO drop box all share the same lubricant, typically 80W90 these days. Filled through the two rear ports with pipe plugs.

The hydraulic reservoir is separate, filled through the forward port with the bayonet stab and lubricates the belt pulley gear drive if you have one. Originally called for non-detergent oil, 10W in winter, 20W in summer. Three typical places to lose hydraulic fluid are:
1. out of leaky hose fittings or cylinders; easy to fix
2. forward into bellhousing; major seal replacement
3. rearward into heavy oil lube in wet clutch/PTO chamber; major seal replacement done in conjunction with (2.)

Thanks. I just removed the old cylinders from the two point arms, because they leaked badly. That was easy, like you said. Hopefully I won't need to do the major seal replacement.

the hydraulics on my D-17 are not picking up a load, They were not working at all, and i replaced the pump and they will pick up all the way without anything on them, i put a 5" disk on the back and it would not pick it up but about 2" off the ground. Has anyone had this problem in the past, is my pump bad or is it in the back where my arms are located behind and under the seat. PLEASE HELP.

our d 19 had similar problems and also when you lifted and let go it fell to the ground. was a problem with the bypass in the valve body. first thing would be to put a pressure hydraulic pressure guage either in the line or one of the remotes to see if your making enough pressure then if not look for bad pump incorrectly installed pump collapsed line and bad valve
