WD serial number

trying to find a serial number to get a new shifter looks like the one that is in there is a 53 model but very worn and no sure looked on back axle and found two different numbers on each side and a small number on engine block any ideas

SN is on the left brake housing facing rearward just below the brake cover. It us usualy pretty faint but that is where the number you are looking for is. Will start with WD and then the number.

If the shifter lever is your concern and you are replacing it anyway. Here is a easier way to know what you need to get. Pull the trans cover. If the transmission is of the Sliding gear variety you have the common trans for a wd and need the straight lever. If it is a constant mesh trans you need the later curved lever.

A curved shifter say it is a late WD or an WD45. If it is a WD it has a bolt on plate on the side of the engine and if it is a WD45 there is no plate on the side of the engine right hand side by the way

What Old said with these additions.

he is right that the WC and straight WD"s had a plate on the right side of the engine where the 45"s and latter didn"t. This isn"t the best indicator on the tractor though. Lots of those engines got swapped.

As to the shifter here are a couple more comments. On the sliding gear trans the knob screwed on the end, on the constant mesh the knob was a rubber affair that slid over a ball on the end of the lever. Only reason I mention is lots of times when guys would change the engine they would put a bend in the shifter handle to give the appearance of a 45.

Straight and curved shift levers are not interchangeable. Curved started on the WD in late 1952, serial number 127008, with the sliding gear, angle-cut gear transmission. Engine number does not ID the tractor- too many have been changed over the years. Plate or not, with that, all you ID is the engine.

ok heres what is off the engine stamp 0287 below that is U3019-40 does that help the tranny is sliding gears curved shifter

U is a casting number- serial numbers are always stamped (cuz when they make the part, they don"t know which tractor it will go on). Engine serial number is also stamped, left side of engine block, between the carb and the rear of the engine. WD45 engines start with 45-. WD engine starts with WD, usually ends in G or PA.

Why not just rebuild what you have ,I got all the parts I needed from B&H in Lititz,Pa think it was around 25-30 bucks
