WD45 hand clutch

On my WD45 the transmission won't stop spinning to shift out of neutral unless I pull back a little on the hand clutch. That stops the transmission from spinning and I can now shift out of neutral into gear without grinding. Any ideas on why?

My 45 done that. Obe of the pads came loose on the main clutch and slid under another. Does the foot cluch work ok.

You are supposed to use the FOOT Clutch for shifting...didn't your Grandad teach ya anything..???

My dad's WD and WD45 can be shifted using the hand clutch only. That is an area of much debate. Some say you can some say you can't. Foot clutch is certainly the best way.

Not 100% sure what your saying here. So are you saying you push on the foot clutch and when you do so you can not shift into gear?? If yes then that could be a number of problems. Also once you have it in gear can you push down on the foot clutch and have it stop??
Things that came to mind is the pilot bearing is going bad, or clutch disk coming apart. Or sticking clutch due to being oil soaked. Or the oil in the transmission is to thin so you get over run. Or clutch is out of adjustment

I always use the foot clutch to shift, and have no problems with either clutch. With tractor running sitting in neutral, when I push in the foot clutch the transmission continues to spin. By idling the tractor way way down, I'm able to shift out of neutral. Planning on putting heavier weight oil in it, but in the meantime I stumbled across this with the hand clutch quickly stopping the tranny from spinning by gently pulling the handle a little to me. Is this normal? That's my only question. Thanks.

I shift my WD45 with both clutches and I start it up a lot with the hand clutch out and in gear. Some say you should not shift gears using the hand clutch but I do it all the time. So in your case the oil level maybe low it 2 thin or it is out of adjustment or any of the other thing I said

Ive put a lot of hours on my 45 I always shift it with the hand clutch if I stopped it with the hand clutch. I do it all the time with the pto running. No idea if you're "supposed to" but I know it never caused me any problems as long as someone uses their head.

Yes you CAN shift a WD-45...it has a synchronized Transmission....the WD (with the Straight Shifter) does not..

I'll stand by the assertion that you can shift them both with the hand clutch. Shifting on the fly isn't the best idea but with some feathering of the throttle isn't bad at all. Trying to start a load behind either machine in 4th from a dead stop is murder on the foot clutch.

I have shifted both but the WD has straight gears and the WD45 is beveled gears not synchronized gears.

Which is another term for a gear that is cut at an angle as in bevel but either way NOT a syncro type gearing and should not be shifted on the fly
