WD45 upper engine noise

1)Is it normal for the engine valve train to be loud? No knocking, it just sounds too loud to me.
2)Valves are properly adjusted and oiling properly.
3)Engine has good compression.
When I bought the tractor, the tube inside the oil filter was missing and there was no flow to the rocker arms. Could this have damaged the camshaft bearings and tappets? Clearance between rocker shaft and arms is OK

I would appreciate hearing opinions and experiences of forum members......RP

Check for loose rocker arms on the shaft. If oil was not getting up there the rocker arms maybe worn to the point they have play in them. Also did you adjust the valves with the engine hot or cold?? Works best if hot. You can also run it with the valve cover off and watch and listen to find where it is noisey

I adjusted the valves with the engine hot. Either 0.013" or 0.014" (I don't remember which). Think I'll just continue to run it and watch it closely. I don't think it's really serious, just annoying.

I found my D-17 engine(same block as the 45) to have the rocker arm supports cracked (I found out only because I loosened the rocker arm bolts and they fell apart 2 out of the 3). I was lucky that they did not completely fall apart when I was using my model D. It was noisey like you described, after I replaced the cracked ones, adjusted the rocker arms, it runs great with little noise, just loud power!

I just found the same problem that PecosAllis described. My WD had a valvetrain noise at #3 that just seemed a bit to loud. I adjusted the valves multiple times, pulled the pan and had a look at the cam and lifters and still couldnt find anything. After I tore the head off, I went to scrub the rocker assembly in the parts washer and when I touched the brush to the stand next to #3, it fell in 2 halves. I had the rockers off 2 times before that, but the oil between it and the shaft, along with the spring pressure, held the pieces in place. Check them closely if you have a noise. If their cracked you wont see it unless your looking for it. I can try and post a pic if anyone is interested in seeing this.
