WD6 still not running

My brothers WD6 still won't run on gas. It will start, but runs real rough and pours out copious amounts of black smoke and then dies. We have adjusted the float level
and changed the size of the hole in the metering rod.

Anybody have an idea what to try next?

first, is this a tractor you are familiar with starting? many have no clue how to start the gas starts. give your steps to start.

Sounds like diesel pump is not turned off. Make sure diesel throttle is in off position. Not sure if it is forward or back to turn off.

I have an MD, so know how to start them, but I was at a show this summer and realized that not everyone knows how to start them. This guy had an Super MD and I should have gone over and told him how to start it. He advanced the diesel lever full throttle and cranked over the engine. You should have seen the smoke. It did eventually start with a lot of smoke pouring out of the exhaust. He eventually switched to diesel mode and the smoke cleared up.

First of all, the diesel is turning off, because we have opened the bleeders while the diesel lever is in the off position and nothing comes out.

To start the tractor,
Turn on gas,
engage starter,
engine should start
this is where the problem is, it just smokes real black and runs really rough and doesn't run very long.

The choke is not on and we have checked the manifold and air passages for obstructions.

If you can get the engine to run long enough on gas to warm up a bit, we add a little diesel until we get white smoke and kick the compression lever on.

Twice, we have gotten it started on diesel from gas and once we towed it to start it on diesel. When it is running on diesel it ran really well.

You didn't mention pushing the decompression lever in the gas position, Have you checked the 4 gas starting valves? Sometimes they stick, or they are not properly adjusted

Will it pull start on gas?

changed the size of the hole in the metering rod to what? didnt think they had a metering rod.
but... these tractors take lots of choke to start them usually. even when running usually need the choke half on till it starts warming up then open the choke. run 1-2 minutes and switch to diesel.
when starting on gas you need the diesel throttle closed. then when its warmed up you switch the decompression lever, then advance throttle some, and you are on diesel.
to bleed fuel filters you need at least 1/2 tank of fuel. gravity feed to the auxillary filter when fuel is coming out the top close bleeder. then start tractor on gas let run and advance throttle some and bleed final filter. once air is out close bleeder.
these tractors usually smoke quite a bit when first started on gas till warm.
you may even have the timing out of whack too and that giving you problems. lots of stuff to check. there is an air valve in the carb for gas rpm too. is this a tractor that was just purchased? or how long has it had this problem? are the wires on correctly? you might be running on only 2 cyl's.gas/ diesel firing order rotation is opposite from gas tractor, counterclockwise. you did not conferm the firing order is correct. wouldnt be surprised if this is the problem.

Try cranking it over with the bleeder screw on the injectors open. If it's pushing fuel out bleeder when cranking over on gas side then the rack and plunger are stuck in the open position. If that is the case the plunger needs to be removed from pump and cleaned. Encountered same problem last winter with my super md when I bought it. Good luck jim.

(quoted from post at 03:47:32 09/22/15) If they take alot of choke to start then something is not adjusted properly. All 3 of mine start with very little choke.

What do you need to adjust to get them to start without choke?
