Weed & grass killer - round-up?

I have a tool (sprayer) that I pull behind my New Holland GT22. I mix weed-be-gone with 25 gal of water and spray the weeds in the lawn. I get good results, kills creeping Charlie too.

I want to spray and kill the grass growing in our gravel driveway. Neighbors tell me they have little success with the round-up that is daluted & sold in stores. [b:55bfe1e093]Is that stuff any good?[/b:55bfe1e093] Sure wish I could find an Iowa farmer that would sell me some real round-up concentrated stuff.

[b:55bfe1e093]What should I use and where can I get some good grass fertilizer?[/b:55bfe1e093] I want liquid that I can spray on.

Any suggestions? Appreciate any and all feedback.

Thanks!

I would go to a farm supply store and buy the full strength product. You want a 3% solution for spot spraying like your wanting to do. So that would be 25x8=200 pints 3% would be 6 pints or 96 ounces of product per tankful.

I would recommend Roundup or any generic RR at 3% PLUS 2-4D at 3% as well. There are lots of common broad leaf weeds that RR will not kill. Sour dock is one of them in driveways.

When your done rinse your tank out with clean water and then put 1 qt. of Ammonia and gallons of water in it. Run the sprayer until it is empty and flush with clean water. You will be safe spraying anything next without any carry over.

Most all farm supply stores (Runnings, Mills Fleet Farm, TSC, Bomgards (I think it's spelled?)) has a whole shelf of farm sprayer parts and
simple farm herbicides. -Not- in the garden center.

They likely will have Roundup in 2-2.5 gallon jugs, and also generic Roundup which is the same thing. Typically this is 4 lb stuff, which is a
farmer type concentrate.

As the season moves on into fall, these displays often disappear and fall or farm stuff gets put up, so the isle might be looking pretty picked
over by now, if you want something............

Getting and handling a modest amount of liquid fertilizer, I donno where to go for that? You may find liquid N on the same shelves, but that is
pretty high priced for the amount you need.... It is sometimes used along with the herbicides, so you will find some in 2 gallon jugs, but P and K
are really gonna be hard to find.

I am responsible for vegetation control on the airport in my front yard.

We use RoundUp Concentrate (purchased in ~2 gallon jugs) for killing vegetation where we want other vegetation to return. Examples are weeding between hay crops, and weeding along taxiways and runways. The Roundup is diluted according to package instructions and is usually applied with either a backpack sprayer, or in most cases with a garden tractor pulled tank-type sprayer with an electric pump and multiple nozzle spray bar.

For areas where we absolutely do not want any vegetation to grow, we use a product named Ground Clear. Again available in concentrate form in large jugs. It is easily diluted and sprayed, usually using a pinpoint wand on a hand sprayer (for pavement cracks) or for larger areas (driveways, taxiways, public access paths) a backpack sprayer.

Roundup definitely kills unwanted weeds that are currently growing, but new vegetation will soon sprout to take it's place. Roundup is only effective when sprayed directly on growing plants and is NOT a soil sterilizer. Spraying it directly on the soil is a total waste of material and effort!

Ground Clear actually sterilizes the soil and prevents new seed germination for up to a couple of years dependent on weather conditions.

Hope this helps!

If you are serious about full season weed ELIMINATION in a non-lawn area, shell out some bucks and get some Bayer "Esplanade".

It's glyphosate, diquat, and "indaziflam", a "cellulose growth inhibitor" in one.

Quick burndown from the diquat, plant and root death from the glyphosate, and a 6-month residual on new weeds from the indaziflam.

Don't forget the importance of a surfactant, especially on summer
hardened target plants. You can buy the materials labeled as such on the
pesticide shelf but I just go to the "dollar" store that's on my way (
they seem to be everywhere now) and get the cheapest dish soap they have,
usually a 12-16 ounce bottle, give my spray solution about an ounce per
gallon.

I use the "Big & Tuff" brand of glyphosate sold at the farm store. When the weeds in your driveway are dead, apply some "Barrier", also available at the farm store. Barrier stops seeds from germinating so you driveway will remain weed free for several months.

I use a product by Ortho called "Ground Clear" (think that's it's name) on the rock driveway (shop) and for banding
around out buildings and etc, usually put a little diesel fuel with it,it lasts most all summer, kills every thing!! Have
used it for past 3 years!!! Roundup dosent last near long enough for me!!!!!

lol....swing by the next time I'm doing some tire work and have to drain down a loaded tire. Stuff kills everything...for about a year.

Good grief, there is no need to go on a road trip to get a gallon of glyphosphate/roundup.

Your local Tractor Supply, Runnings, Oerschlins, Rural King, or any place that caters to "country people" will have it right on the shelf. Even in the garden section. Heck I've even gotten smaller (overpriced) bottles of the concentrate at Home Depot!

2-4-D is also marketed under the name Amine 400.

The generic glyphosphate will show 41% on the bottle. I think real Roundup is closer to 50%.

I think real round-up is 41% and anyone can buy that. We buy a generic at a farm store (not big box) for <$40 for 2 1/2 gal
and mix it about 3 0z per gal with a little soap. If we really want to kill everything we mix some 2,4-D with it, that's
about the same price. I have seen roundup up in the 90% range but it was almost $100 a gallon, not worth it for me.

If you leave any roundup solution in the tank or lines/nozzles, it will turn to goo and plug thing up.
Will Ammonia work as a cleanup after roundup? I have always used detergent and then rinsed with clear
water. Always looking for the "better way".

I still have a quart bottle of Roundup 41% concentrate that I bought in 1981. $39.95!!! With inflation that's about $130 in today's money. For a quart! Patent was still valid back then, so Montsano could charge that...

I transfer a quart out of the 2.5 gallon jug into it and use that for when I want a couple of ounces for the backpack sprayer. Since it's a Roundup bottle, no doubt what's in it...

I do a 1% solution, that will kill almost anything, including poison oak. Had to go to 8% to kill Algerian Ivy, that was one tough plant.

The trick is to spray when the plants are young and growing, hard part is to figure out when 90%+ of the weed seeds have germinated, so you don't have to spray twice because you were too early....

Gunny in Iowa,
I have tenants ask your same question. I tell them I don't care
what you use to kill the grass, it will come back. The stronger
stuff may last a little longer, but it will still come back
sooner or later.

The way I look at it, grass and weeds in gravel drive is my
friend. It holds the rock in place when I pushing snow. I don't
end up with rocks in the yard when snow melts.
