weed killer for pasture

I want to over seed a pasture this spring....The weeds are starting to overtake the grasses

What's a good weed killer to use on a pasture but not kill the grass already there ??

Will rough up after knocking the weed population down and then broadcast a good pasture mix seed

I would use Trimec on it, the weeds will come back if you do not manage your pasture correctly again.

Milestone works well. It is harmless to livestock, because it goes right through them- into the manure, so you can't use the manure on your garden. But it gives a good root kill on broadleafs.

Depends on how clean you want the field. Things to consider are residuals that might limit you're pasturing or haying.

I like 2-4d, but needed something better last year and used an herbicide called Pasturegard. I'm a believer. It really cleaned up my hay fields.

Good luck,
Bill

Don't know - is trimec a brand or straight 2,4d?

2,4d did a pretty good job cleaning up my fields, but was not through enough. I was plagued by a woody root plant called tick treefoil (sp?) and 2,4d wouldn't touch it. I also had some clover that the 2,4d would mostly kill, but not wipe out. Mostly I bought the Pasturegard to deal with the tick treefoil as it was recommended by ag extension agent working with me to identify the weed and kill it.

The Pasturegard wiped out - really everything except the grass hay in my fields. I had great quality orchard grass, native grass mix hay - no weeds. Probably the first time truely weed free hay has been made on this farm for a generation. Pasturegard also has no residuals and you can cut hay sooner after applying than 2,4d.

But - it's EXPENSIVE!!!!!!

I'll still use 2,4d, but on my new timothy fields, I'll start out using Pasturegard.

Agreed, there is no pastureland management system that equal's rotational grazing if you factor in labor, material costs and livestock profit. I dropped sheep in the mix for rotation but goats on pasture full time x cattle part time works fairly well. Goats full time arn't hurting grass if you pull cows to grow hay. Herbicide effect on weeds is effected by timing and moisture. Plants starving for moisture isn't effected near as much as when in good condition.

Be careful with 2-4-D. I know a few people who have killed animals with that. A couple of goats are thought to have succumbed to
it. I know it is deadly for camelids. Llamas and alpacas only need walk on it even months after application. Seems cloven
hooves are some what susceptible. Google it. Stories of cattle getting sick and caves dying. Some say to wait until next season
before grazing.

We use <a href="http://www.dowagro.com/en-us/range/products/grazonnext-hl">GrazonNext HL</a> every Spring to kill weeds in our fields.

GrazonNext will not kill the grass and, as the name implies, livestock can graze on the field the next day after spraying.

Hope this helps.
