Weedy oats

I combined oats today, well, some of them. One side of the field was clean, the other side was a mess. Ragweed mostly and some lambsquarter. There was a straight line right across the field that was the dividing line. I was puzzled for a while since I hadn't spread any manure on it.

It finally dawned on me. I had chopped the corn off just over half of it last year and picked the rest. The line was right where I stopped chopping and started picking. The weeds were where I picked. Near as I can figure, some weeds came up after the spray wore off and chopping took the seed off, picking left it and it sprouted. I never would have guessed that would happen, but I don't remember splitting a field that way. Usually all chopped or all picked. I left the weedy mess today and I'll just cut it with the discbine and bale it for straw when the weeds dry out.

Sprayed mine when they were 4" tall with a 1/4 pint of 2 4D. Stayed pretty clean.

I give you farmers so much credit. It's far more complicated than urban folks realize.

I seeded mine to alfalfa and clover so I didn't dare spray them.

Have a field that was plowed on one half and the other side was disced as usual. It took four years for the difference in weeds to dissappear. The plowed side had less for that time.

Yea I put clovers and alfalfas underseeded on my oats, so can’t do much spraying. One year will be clean, another year will be a mess.

Ya, there are years that I sure wish I had a swather. One year I just went in and cut a few half way clean spots out of the middle of the field, cut all of the rest down with the haybine because of lambsquarter. I had hauled a whole bunch of manure on that one. Ironically, that was one of the best alfalfa seedings I ever had. You'd have thought the weeds would have choked it out entirely.
