weld on hubs

When installing weld on hubs, are you guys preheating the axle before welding? Trying to have a good weld the first time, not a broken one on the track.

I didn't, but probably you should. I couldn't because had to have the seals in the axle housing. I made a plate so I could run water over the axle to keep it cool. I first tacked then welded one pass with farmer rods 1109's. chipped then welded another pass with 7018's set at about 175. chipped then another pass, etc till I was satisfied. That not true I'm never satisfied with my welding. With my bi-focal's I can't see good enough to be a good welder. But they have lasted 3 yrs. Vic

some axles are heat treated heard you need to grind off the outer heat treated part before welding on new hub didnt on my 88 and it cracked till i really got the weld penetration down deep
