welding cable

THe input wires from the wall outlet should be 10 gauge. The ground and stinger both should be O gauge if short (15 feet) or 00 gauge up to 30 ft.
Both wires must carry the same current. Jim

My old buzz box had 0 Gauge fine stranded copper "welding cable", both leads of course.

Most welders have 50 amp plugs, even though they might only draw 30. Minimum gauge for 50 amp service is AWG 6.

Mark - My Hobart stick welder has a #12 power cord. I guess it has something to do with the duty cycle of the welder?

Probably. And I doubt it draws anywhere near 50 amps. More like 25 to 30 amps, which would still be a lot for a 12 gauge cord.
