Welding cast iron.

Just been watching Curtiss from Cutting Edge Engineering welding up a smashed cast iron transmission housing from a Cat grader. This technique has got to have an application in welding cracked blocks, casing etc in the Yesterdays Tractors world?
Any of you folks seen this in action in any of your local shops?? This guy's channel is WELL worth watching! Jim

Jim, I have watched several of his videos and that cast welding is really neat. Never seen it done like that.

Yes, very interesting, i have a neighbor, that was a college exchange student, and got to spend a year in Austrailia,on a farm, he said they just dont have access to parts like we do in USA, but that was in the 80's maybe, it has improved since then!

That guy knows what he's doing.

Righteous process and operator. Were I the insurance man I would likely pay the owner 50% of the part cost to run the machine as repaired, with a guarantee of replacement if it breaks in service. Jim

Yes, I've enjoyed watching Abom79's videos too, especially when he is actually making stuff - less so recently when he seems to have made
very little! But Cutting Edge Engineering's shop and tools, and the jobs he tackles, make Abom79's shop and tools set-up look like toytown!

I watched some of his videos where he was repairing large hydraulic cylinders, I think they were from excavators for a large mining operation. He does seem to know what he is doing. It was interesting that he appeared to make no attempt to check for a leak. He must trust his work. I would have at least used a spray bottle of diesel fuel to see if any weeped through.

I've had good luck welding cast with nickel rods, we always kept some on the farm. I just bought a 60 pound bench vise for $10 that has 2 mounting ears broken off, I'm confident I can weld them back on!

That was extremely interesting!

I agree with him that the patch is not pleasing to the eye. :)

But wow! The whole process was was amazing to watch... even the creation of the patch, in addtion to the actual welding.

Will share the web link with my husband.
