Well right or wrong fixing rake

Cant find a decent rake in my price range so I guess Ill
pour money down this sink hole and hope it will run
another year . New tine bar bearings new drive shaft
and new yokes for the cross shaft because theyre shot
. Still debating to rebuild the gearbox

I've bought wheel rakes for about what you are about to put in to a bar rake. I think I paid 750 for a 3pt vee wheel rake and I put about 5 times that into the front fold wheel rake I use too. We have about 4 of those old steel wheeled Deere and IH rakes if you were close We would probably sell you one of those some can be pulled out and used after a greasing. One or 2 are parts rakes.

Cant find a wheel rake for less than a 1000 dollars here been looking for 2 years now . Actually thought I had a mounted 3 wheel rake found for a 1000$ but missed it . This hasnt been a bad rake paid 100$ for it 15 or so years ago now star wheel on one side the driven side has been broke and welded a few times I have a new one on my shelf. What I really hope I can find is a carted v wheel rake so I can double rake a lot faster . I have to travel quite a few miles on pavement to get to different fields a steel wheel rake would be kind of a pain but better than a pitchfork for sure . With the 101 if I can keep ford power steering pump wound up I can turn windrows from a 12 foot swather and not have to skip Windrows

If you could afford $1000 2 years ago, and didn't spend it, and you could afford $1000 1 year ago, and didn't spend it, doesn't that mean you have $2000 to spend now? Of course it doesn't but that's not my point. If you were able to save up $1000, why not keep saving to increase your rake budget?

$1000 isn't going to get you scrap these days.

Do a little looking around for the u-joints, they are fairly common in other apps
Those NH bar rakes are totally worth rebuilding and will give years of continued service
If the gears are good you can rebearing the gear box and then fill it with corn head grease

I'm not a fan of those vertical fold rakes. I like the front fold ones better and the one I have will adjust width in the back so if the hay is to big you can open it up some so the hay doesn't ball up in the back of the wheels. if there is to much hay and to little space by the tires and the wheels hay will bind up there and plug. the problem I have seldom with my front fold rake. I took a Gehl Vee rake and flipped the left side over and then set it back enough to clear the frame so I can rake 2 single windrows at a time with it. This is using a 9 foot swath raking the 2 singles.

NH 256 best rake of that style ever sold,I have 2 of them,well worth putting a few $$$$ into.Had a JD for years once I used the NH never hooked up the JD again.

Its been a good rake it will roll anything . Raked with a double John Deere like this for the neighbors it would roll double windrows of the heaviest hay you could find they didnt have a utility tractor so pulled it with an 8400 John Deere well after I left they. Put dumb kid raking and he went. So fast he broke the frame then instead of fixing it they scrapped it I never seen it but I would think there would have been enough left to make one from the two .

Im replacing the entire yoke not just the u joint
because it has been run so long with bad ujoints they
are bad

If it is still possible to return the bearings, I have had luck pressing the special bolt out of the middle and then replacing just the bearing part. I got a set of cheap sealed bearings. I think it was a set of 10 for $25. They have held up for 3-4 years so far. Rake is stored outside, too. The ones I used were 3/4 ID and 47mm OD, 14mm thick. It is an odd size (inch inside and metric outside), but they can be found. Mine's an Oliver 207--yours may take a different size. Saved me a lot of money over buying the special bearings with the inner bolt.

Too late to return them now . I wish the bearings were greasable .

Drill and tap each bar for a grease fitting then pop the rear seal out of the bearing
Did that to my 256 rake
