A Derby pull is a dead weight pull. Some people call it a stone boat pull.
We weigh down a steel and cement sled with barrels full of cement weighing about 1200lbs each. Pullers have to pull the sled 15 feet for a full pull. If a full pull is not completed by everyone in the class it comes down to who moved the sled the furthest for the winner.

Years ago before transfer sleds we pulled stoneboat. The final pulls were mostly for inches and if you could spot the boat on your final pull it all came down to who was the sharpest at spotting the boat. Won a class at Morris Pa. with a full pull, got the nose of the sled low and the tractor up and took it right outa there. Great fun but you could still be pullin at morning milking time, went home a couple times when the sun was coming up! Great memories, Morris still has that pull every fall.
