What do you use for engine assembly lube

Engine oil on cylinders, pistons, and rings. Lubriplate 105 Motor assembly grease or Lucas assembly lube on bearings and other places.

I have used STP and it worked ok. However, the Lubriplate, or an assembly lube, is not as sticky and doesn't cause as much drag as STP.

I've been rebuilding engines for over 50 years now and I always use STP oil treatment and never had problem yet by doing that
wow, 50 YEARS ! so how many engines did you actually rebuild. ? i know the BN was scabbed together.

I agree with OLD. STP for many years, all OK! STP on bearings crank-cam- rockers-push rods-connecting rods- seals. Engine oil for pistons-rings-sleeves. Just remember to lubricate any MOVING parts!

When I was going to automotive tech school (this was decades ago), we had a guest instructor come into class and gave us a little speech on engine assembly. I remember him specifically saying STP was okay, but only if the engine was going to be started within a few days. If the engine was going to set awhile, the STP would eventually drain off. I know I'm not going to change anyone's opinion here, and I don't care to. Just repeating an old wives tale from years ago. I, myself, use the assembly lube that comes out of a tube and looks like white toothpaste.
In some areas, like a push rod underneath a rocker arm, you can see a little bit of extra sticking out and you know that assembly lube has been used.

X2, or Hilton Hyper Lube. We kept a spare, rebuilt long block for our line trucks at all times. They might set for a year before being used, never had a problem.

I use what auto parts has ,I think it’s Lucas assembly oil. Blue green goop.
I use it even if it’s going back together soon instead of oil , nope ! Something always happens to me that it sits around .
good idea to use break oil in addition, and prime oil galleys and filter cartridge.
X2 on the priming, I still have the oil pump drive tools for the Ford and Chev. V8s in my tool box drawer.

There are a few things to keep in mind. First is that sometimes plans change, and an engine that was supposed to be done and run within a few days sits for a year instead. Then you wished you used real assembly lube. Second, camshafts can be really hurt by inadequate lube. Third, it takes time for first oil to get to the rockers. I use the Lucas product. STP is really good for those rebuilds that are in your dreams only.

You know what I use...engine oil and plenty of it. Sometimes Vaselene , grease, and more oil, oil then more oil. why not? What do you use for a solvent? I use gasoline... lowest cost solvent compared to soap and water. Have a fun debate on lubricants.
