I agree. My algebra teacher in high school had one that looked a lot like that, and she believed in using it freely too.

Our French Mistress ( that sounds suggestive , but isn't, she was a terror ! ) had a ' rounders bat that looked much the same . It hurt , I can still hear the sound of it smacking bums !

I think you are right. The Woodright on PBS.- I forget his name- used a plate like that with various sized holes to make round wooden dowels. There is a photo of him in one of his books where he is using his sizing plate. It shows it clamped to the door jamb in his workshop and he is pulling a piece of wood through one of the holes. He has one foot against the door jamb, it must have taken quite an effort to pull the stick through the hole.
