Trying to figure out what this is, so far I?ve had no luck searching the web. It came with a lot of nos automotive electrical stuff I bought, mainly being rolls of spark plug wire, boots, battery cables and ends, etc. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

Looks like a low voltage tester. My tester is very similar. A wire attaches to the screw. It has a clip on it you connect to ground then probe with the point. It should have a light bulb in it that lights up if you have voltage. They make fancier models now. See the link.

It is a cordless type of automotive test light. You are the ground or earth connection when using it. so idea is no need to ground a cord. issue is they are wwaayy to sensitive. Being in they will show power and light up even with a badly corroded wire feed.. A feed that will not operate a normal bulb. I have seen people frustrated using them as it lights but light wont work!!

Thanks for the answers, makes sense, but I think I will stick with using a multimeter and throw this in a drawer for my ancestors to play with.

It is a wireless test light. You are the ground. I have one ,I think I still have it ,toss it in a drawer and leave it there. Causes more problems then it is worth. Cuda

Glen, that is my go to test instrument for simple 12v electrical problems.

If everyone on here would get one, and practice using it instead of guessing, their lives (and bank accounts) would be much improved! LOL

"issue is they are wwaayy to sensitive"

Yes, that they are!

Place I worked a few years ago would hire health and safety inspectors. Theory was they would keep the real inspectors away if we were in compliance.

One of the safety inspectors had one of those neon voltage testers, going around touching it to the machines checking for bad grounds. He walked up to the Coke machine, said it was not grounded because his test light went off before he even touched it. Said it had to be shut down immediately!

What was happening, he was holding it in front of the plastic cover over the fluorescent lamps.

I told him he was reading static from the lamps. Of course he immediately got defensive, how dare I question him!

I told him to hold the tester near any fluorescent lamp, see what happened.

Sure enough, it lit up!

(quoted from post at 17:00:01 04/23/18) Do you have a time machine also in that drawer?
was thinking along that line, too! :)
