another what is it contraption i found in the upper hay loft at the farm. Not sure if what ever it is is all there. it is wood. the one piece slides up and down

i wondered if a quilt rack??

First, I don’t know what it is. In the case of both of these “what is it” posts by INCase dimensions or something beside them for size of the items is useful. Fawteen, your suggestion is the frame that holds the blade as shown in the photo? To me what he shows seems like it has to much mass to it, all that weight would wear out your arms. The same for it being a quilting frame, to heavy and bulky. The quilting frames I know of are simply 1 x 3s or 1 x 4’s clamped at the corners with small C clamps.
One possibility is maybe a skin or hide stretcher. The way the one board slides over the other two side boards I have this guess. Could it possibly be a rack for storing cloth grain or flour sacks draped over the bottom board. Hanging from a roof with wires to keep them away from rodents? As more bags are added the sliding “weight” board is slid up.

Quilting frame I cannot tell the size of the construction, but it has the look of a frame to stretch a quilt for Stitch in a ditch quilting. Jim

Not knowing dimensions it is difficult to say, the boards for the women’s quilting group my 84 year old mother is involved in through here country church are long enough to roll up one side of a quilt for a king sized bed. Just guessing on what he is showing the boards look to be about 4” wide. To me it looks like the board that slides might measure its width about 10 or so times on the board it slides over making it approximately 40” long. Might work for a baby crib quilt. But believe me I have no idea of all the ins and outs of quilting? As a point in reference, I had never hear the term “stitch in the ditch”

“Stitch in the ditch” has been around as a technique for generations. Alternately “stich and bi+€h” seems to be a more recent term for this generation’s congress of consolidation.

Sorry, it is about 4ft wide give or take looks like it was painted light yellow at some point.

That's what I thought from looking at the grass blades next to it that are generally about a quarter inch wide.
