What is this for?
I think Robin Hood may have used it to pump water at his Sherwood forest hideout. A fan was attacked to the shaft, wind powered pump.

Universal gear pump, positive displacement, good for many different fluids.

May be a casting number, or would have had a tag originally.
 
I agree with Steve, I do believe in general a gear pump is not used for water applications. More lubes or fuels but maybe I am blowing wind. They sure think the one in the link is worth a lot even with an intentional window cut in it ??

Bronze gear pump with stainless steel shaft, they have been used for all sorts of things, from machine tool coolant pumps to spray pumps on small agricultural sprayers from "back in the day", matter of fact, I have an old sprayer that fit in a pickup box that uses a pump like that, direct-driven by a Tecumseh engine sitting back in the trees.
