Do I need to take these nuts apart

Can't tell for sure from the picture, but a lot of those are pressed together, like you sometimes see on wheel studs.

The old Maytag washers used some (larger) bolts like that, with a fine spline, I think the Maytag bolts/wrench were probably proprietary to them, and I believe it was called a spline wrench. I owned one at one time and lost it in a shop fire in 1983.

I would suspect, if, in fact, the fasteners in your photo actually screw together it's a proprietary/special fastener as well.

But if you want to do some looking on the 'net I would suggest searching for spline socket and see if you can find any that small.

Turns out they're not rivets, nor pressed in like I said below. Video linked shows what they are--they're post-type screws, like a Chicago screw. He discusses them about the 3 minute mark. He removes them with vise-grips but I did find another video where someone on Ebay was selling special wrenches for them in various sizes. Never had a reason to know that before, but now I do!

I have taken them apart with a small Vise Grip. Note that they aren't nuts. One is the end of the shaft that goes through the tool, the other is a screw that goes into the end of the shaft. Only the screw will turn, so figure out which one is the screw and grab it with a vise grip. They're pretty tight, but if you get a good grip on the screw it will break free.

Common a lot of tool handles, Saws, heavy knives etc. Lets see if I can get this past the word filter,
the correct name is s e x screw. Look it up, lots of sources and uses.

Little vice grips work for me.

I have seen the correct tool, but never found one to buy. It looks just like you'd expect: A mirror image of the head, tapered recess with little teeth that lock on the head. Screwdriver type handle.
