What lube for posthole digger

Part of the deal I made with my neighbor last month for the wood for the pole building included the use of his three point post hole digger. It's old, but he said it works well. It does leak and I want to have lube on hand for it. What lube shold I be using?

I find that universal trans-hydraulic oil will likely cover the bill, and can have it on hand for use in the tractors, or any other gearbox.

I bet 90weight would be the original spec.

If it leaks a lot & is a simple gear, the JD corn head grease (aka triple zero grease I think....) would be good. It doesn't leak out of a seal too much because it is thick, but it is designed to handle lubing a gear set.

Just general ideas, should your gears heat up & blow out, don't blame me. :)

Contact the PHD manufacture and see what they advise. My Land Pride uses straight 90 weight but I can't find any - only multi weight. LP customer service said I could use a multi-weight of 80?-90 if no 90wt is avail. Good luck.

Ended up not using it anyway, the drive shaft off my mower did not fit, and this thing had huge rust holes in it. I ended up renting one to do the job.
