What replaced the 544

I don't believe there was much/any need for a 45HP true row crop tractor on farms by the time the 66 series rolled out, so nothing directly replaced the 544. If you needed something like that you got a 666, even though it was a little bigger. If you needed something of that horsepower you got the Utility model.

The hood and the frame rails are 3-4 inches shorter on the 544 row crop than the 656 row crop. I have both and thats the only differance ive come across.

Brakes on 544 Farmall are 6 inches in diameter. Brakes on 656 Farmall are 6 1/2 inches in diameter. Check the clutch. I think the disk is 10.5 on the 544 and 11 inches on the 656. Not certain of clutch though.

The 574 replaced the 544. The 544 & 656 Farmall transmissions and rearends were basically the same. The 544 utility was more like a 504 utility than a 656.

To be clear, though, the 574 is a Utility tractor, with ZERO in common with the 544, Farmall or Utility.

The 574 could be purchased with a "row crop" package, meaning bar axles, 38" rear tires, and a special row crop front end, but at the core the tractor is still a low-sitting Utility model with the transmission hump between your legs. It was not a flat-deck Farmall model. If that's what you wanted you had to purchase a 666, or the much larger and heavier 766.
