What was this part for?

Since I got my 48 8N a few years ago I have been wondering what this part would be used for. It is only on the front left tire and not the right. I have not been able to think of any attachment that would need to be attached to the front end and turn with the front tires. Hopefully someone can answer this question for me.

Looks like a steering link that the drag link connects to,however why would one side have it and not on the other. That's what the steering bar or link looks like on lots of old trucks, where the pitman arm steers one side, which connects to the other side. That may not be what it is,but if we could see it in context,it may be more clear.---lha

Can't really tell.
I know someone made a contraption that you could steer an N while walking along side of it.
Palmer Fossum had one on one of his tractors.
As he explained it you could have the tractor in low gear and just above an idle. Then you could pick rocks or hay bales and steer it as you went along.

There were some old trailing disc plows that had a steerable rear weighted tail wheel. It made it possible to turn a slight curve while turning land. IH and John Deere both had such set ups back years ago when I worked in tractor dealerships. I never saw one on a Ford but I think that may have been what that was for on your tractor.

Just guessing, but the tractor shared several parts with trucks from the 1930's. It may be that some one had a bad spindle on the tractor and the truck spindle fit. The truck spindle would have had such an arm for the straight axle steering.

Like I said just a guess.
