Whats a D-17 WORTH??

My neighbor just bought a d-17 gas, wide front. The tractor sounds decent when its running, but needs some tlc... Its getting water in the engine oil,and there is also milky oil dripping out of the distributer where the tack cable goes on... It has brand new tires all around. It has a rather unique 3 point. The pto has to be on to lift it (non live) but as soon as the clutch is pushed in it goes down...not to familiar with AC, mostly been an IH guy so im just curious what there worth, pros, cons? and whats the deal with the 3 point? thanks in advance for any help

The pto and hyd are live- but only when using the hand clutch, aka, Power Director. PTO and hyd are not independent....,.some people don"t know the difference between live and independent- indy runs whenever the engine is running. Foot clutch on a D17 stops all wheel, pto, hyd motion, giving live power to the hyd and pto. When you say 3 point, do you mean a real 3 point conversion, or the Snap-Coupler system?

take the valve cover off and see if one of the freeze plugs under the cam shaft has a hole in it.. that lets water into the oil.

D17's are one of the best tractors anybody built. They're pretty tough. Series 1 thru 3 have a low volume/high pressure hyd system that isn't very compatible with non AC equipment. When the series 4 came out, they had an industry standard live hyd system.
4 new tires are easily worth $1500. I'd say series 1 to 3 probably $2K to $4K. Series 4 easily brings $4K probably closer to $6K for a nice one.

John I have been around D17's for 53 years, never heard of 1 that you have to have the PTO on to run the hydraulics, does it have a pto pump running a loader? Mostly in usual condition around 2500 for a series 1 to 3 up to 6000.00 for a good series 4 model.

On a Series IV the hydrualics are live at all times, even when the foot clutch is engaged. Thats the reason for the difference in price compared to the earlier ones.
