wheel bearings

Just cleaned up the front hubs and changed and greased the wheel bearings, also changed the races. Should there be any slop between the rear bearing and the rear seal,or should it be a tight fit??
The rear seal was installed with the metal towards the bearing and the rubber towards the spindel.
This is a 1948 8N.
Thanks!!

It just bottoms out in it's bore,or flush with the hub,not against the bearing.---lha

You'll have to remove it and turn it over the metal always goes toward the spindle, however,if you leave it that way,I don't see any bad that could happen since there is no brake to foul should it leak a bit of grease.Sorry I didn't mention, senior moment!!!---lha

You would think the rubber (elastomer)would go towards the bearing, but in this case the purpose of the seal is not to keep grease from coming out from the bearing, but to keep dirt, etc. from going into the bearing. So, the metal part goes towards the bearing and the elastomer goes towards the spindle.

uh? lha.......Mike is correct, front seal METAL towards the bearing, and rubber towards the spindle. .......respectfully, Dell, the seal-less
