Wheel paint (colors)

Got a really dumb question. Tried using the search button but no luck.

I just got some new rear tires for my 641, and am going to probably get one new wheel, paint both wheels, and mount 'em up. Over the course of the next year I want to give the whole machine a good paint job. Want to stay looking original. But I'll start with the rear wheels now while I'm messing with it.

My dumb question is regarding rear wheel colors. I see some tractors with silver wheels, and some with the tan/gray. What is correct for a '58 641? Also, if it's silver, if you happen to have a paint code, that would help.

Most aftermarket rims are silver. They were
originally the same light grey as the fenders.

On my 58 641 I did the typical ford grey (tan) on the wheels, but I mixed it up a little by painting the lugs, center caps and locks ford red/orange, gives it a nice look!
I'd post pics but we're getting hammered here in ks with snow right now.

Silver colored "hammered aluminum" is an awful, close replica of the original rims, in my book anyway

The rims were grey like the sheet metal originally.

My recollection of the colors back in the fifty"s and sixty"s, when I worked at a dealership ,was they were a galvanized color. I don"t recall any of them being painted. Need more opinions or facts.

I'm not old enough to have seen any new '50's-'60's tractors. Oldest ones I have seen that I -know- to be original paint ('70's and '80's models) have had both silver and light grey rims. The original rims on my Jubilee were light grey, but I can't say for sure that was original paint. Appeared to be, but I can't say for sure.

back in the old days most tractors came with cadium plated rear rims, this was done to help them last it was a grey color kind of like the "hammered paint" today most guys replicate this feature today by the use of silver paint or light grey, any color will work since your going for the look,not the actual thing, the center disc was body color ,for the front the whole rim was body color since fords do not have demountable rims like other brands do

Silver metallic paint is the worst paint you can use but I like silver... A new rim painted silver is the worst and the paint will not last long... It would be a good time to apply a single stage urethane on'em...

I think I'm gonna go with silver. Since I get my paint from the local NAPA (Martin Senour), I'm gonna run with the Hobo paint from his previous post:

This what I use I get it from NAPA (Martin-Senour) I think its called Silver Oliver the local store has a tractor color code book with the paint chip samples in it. If interested I can find out zackly what the code is. I think its 55-4869.
I prime with epoxy and spray the paint with a old Binks gun,,, Its signal stage and lays on nicely...

And.....so much for my budget on this machine. Looks like it's getting two new wheels now to go with the two new tires. :roll: Who would'a thunk it?

If that info does not work call 919-775-2335 (H&H auto parts) ask for Dan he's the store owner and a tractor nut,,, he will fix you up on the silver color code...

Bingo.

The OEM rims were galvanized.

About as close as one can get with paint is Rustoleum hammered metal silver.

What I want to know is how and why do you remove galvanize coating. The 901 rims that I have cleaned up for painting had no galvanizing on them which means that since they had been cadmium plated or galvanized when manufactured someone before me had to have taken it off. I know that arc welding will remove it but I also know that it is unhealthy. My experience with galvanized nuts bolts eye bolts etc. is that it is fairly durable. The rims on my 901 and my 960 both had rust here and there so I had to clean them up good, but I found no galvanizing under the paint or rust. The rims on my 9000 which actually came new with an 8600, were painted white and were rusty here and there. Rims that I have bought new came painted silver as do all Unverferth rims.
