wheel shake

As I was installing chains for the winter I noticed about 3/16" shake at the tire of my 8. It actually feels like more than that--it is really loose. I gather that the hub and seal will need replaced. My question is: How long can I wait? Do it now? What will fail if I leave it or is that as stupid as it sounds? I will use it about 10 hrs. this winter. Can I get away with it or have I already gotten away with too much?

It will probably be ok, other than coating the brakes with rear end oil.

I assume that the nut is tight?

Nut was not tight. Tightened to about 30# seems to make to much drag. Is there a torque spec? Or should I take it apart to see what's wrong?

The nut "should have" a spring around the middle outside, that goes thru a hole and locks the nut from turning.

It catches in a groove in the axle.

You need to remove it to tighten the nut.

Dells says 400 ft lbs torque.

Well I gave it the 400#. It has a considerable amount of drag but not much more than at 30#. The nut stopped turning at about 250 so it is good and tight. The lock ring was in but not locked which could be the problem I hope. Thanks for the help. Now the chains.
