Wheel Weights Disadvantages

Are there any disadvantages to using Wheel Weights over hanging weights in tractor pulling?
Most winning tractors seam to run no wheel weights. Does turning those wheel weights take away from usuable torque and Horsepower?
Thanks Just wondering

kinda new to pullin but i know the heavier wheels take more rotational force to turn them, but im not sure how that effcts tractors like it does cars. i am not sure if theres any tests done to see if it accualy loses power. but like stated before your biggest disadvantage is there only 1 spot to put them

I will agree with you that they are hard to handle. Try to tell my dad that he says to get the weight on the axle and balance it from the front. He is a tough competitor with his moline and is hard to compete against in NATPA or pulls anywhere. I have mine so that I can use all suitcase weights or use round wheel weights if I want to. In the fast classes I would want to have all suitcase weights because of the speed.

Advantage suitcase weights or other "chassis" type weights because they can be placed so their weight can make leverage and/or balance tractor better...example...weights on a bracket behind rear wheel put more weight down on rear wheel...and lighten a heavy front end than a like weight(s) can do attached to the wheel. Same with front weights on a bracket out front instead of weights on the wheels. I doubt that the weight(s) on the wheel make any "rolling resistance" of any consequence.

If I needed to add weights to make my lightest class, and could choose between wheelweights or ballast, I would load my tires first and keep that weight off the axles and in the tires. And use suitcase weights to jump to the next heavier class, moving their posistion to suit the track conditions. I prefer my competaters to throw the 150# farmall weights, cuz I am a lightweight myself.

wheel weight work better for slow paced class i have hung the weight on wheel then pulled and then hung them off bracket on back of axle and pulled same tractor same weights same track same day same class was almost 10 feet difference in the fast paced classes i would use hand weights never done any experimenting with those classes but have seen enough of what others do to see the difference
