When to change plugs

Looking for opinions here. My '58 D17 runs like a top - a little low oil pressure, but starts and runs like the day it came from the factory. Thing is, I haven't changed plugs/points, etc. in years (I can't remember the last time I did it!). If it's running fine, do you change those things as a preventative or do you wait for them to wear out?

It is usually a question of engine hours. If you use it 20 or 30 hours a year, it may not be needed for 5 or more years. If it starts good and runs good, I'd use it. The biggest issue is that the grease wears out on the rubbing block and the points don't open the correct amount. New grease and re-gapping can extend use in that case.

That sort of goes back to if it isn't broke don't fix it sort of thing. I have tractors that I have not tuned up in a decade of more and as long as they run well I'll leave them like they are because I know if I start messing with them something will brake down for sure LOL

When I was farming I put new plugs in just before I would be able to get into the fields. I always bout extra plugs to have in the truck. I never figured I wanted loose field time if the fire blew out of a plug or two. Not farming and with more tractors than when I was, I only change plugs when they start to miss. Same with points and condencers.

WD45 used to tell Dad in the spring when he started plowing if it needed new plugs.
Otherwise, leave it alone. Don't very often see a really worn out plug.
