Where is serial number for 440c?

Hi there, I am looking at purchasing a 440c but the serial number plate is missing on the dash. Did John Deere stamp the serial number anywhere else on the crawlers? Thanks in advance for all your help!

The serial number is not stated elsewhere. It should be on the dash for a diesel and on the housing behind the engine for a gas model. It was reported in Green Magazine a few issues ago that Debuque serial numbers are crossreferenced from the engine number. "Mr. Thinker" stated that if you bring the engine number to a JD dealer along with representative photos of the unit, a regional JD rep will judge if the record description matchs and if it appears that the engine has not been changed out. JD will then allow you to buy a replacement serial tag. It will not exactly match the original and I believe it will have a bar code on it. A replacement tag is better than no tag at all. If you buy this tractor and take this coarse of action, I would suggest you keep all records so you can describe the replacement tag if you ever want to sell it. This would prove that the tag was obtained by ethical means. I plan to do this with my 440I. You should get some level of discount in price for a tractor without a tag.

The MC were on the dash and I think the rest 40,420,430,440 were all on the LEFT side of the center section between the engine and the transmission. Some in the middle and others up front more on the bell housing section.
