which is better

9n or 8n. there are two for sale local, im thinking of buying one for snow removal and hauling trailers. it would be replacing my worst purchase, a clapped out cub I bought in febaury.

If you are going to work with it, the 9N requires both feet to use both brakes, left and right pedals on their side, with the 8N you use your right foot for both. 9N is a front mounted distributor that can be a pain to work on.

Those are the 2 biggest "issues" to me as someone that uses a 9N. But I knew that going in. Also knew a new sub-compact/compact is in the cards, probably this time next year.
 
At the risk of being labelled as picking on you, I have to wonder about the logic of how this is going to work.

You have a MF135 that you can't bring home until August because of lack of room. You told us this yesterday.

We can guess there is a lack of room for the Cub as well, since it and the MF were to come home at the same time.

Where is this next tractor going to be stored if you have no room for ones, you already have?

As GChief said the 8N has some advantages, especially if it has the side mount distributor, instead of the front mount. If there is room at home for an 8N or 9N, forget getting either of those for now; and get the MF135 home, it is better than either of those. JMHO.

And like GChief said, the best one is a later 8N with the side mount distributor. Way easier to work on and less problematic, plus having both brake pedals on the right side is nice.

Just remember with snow removal you won't have live hydraulics, so it makes it a little more challenging, but not that hard.

if I do get it its going the same place as the 135. the cub went to the scrap yard.

I bought a cub sight unseen. had me and my uncle dragged it to my grandmas house. I went to work on it and tried to turn the engine by the fan and tried to put a bar on it. it did not budge. my uncle took the head off and the pistons where rusted in place.

nothing hard about the front mount and it is impossible really to put it in wrong, because it only goes one way unless you happen to force it. as long as you take a photo of the way the little tang is facing when it comes out. I think of deciding which to go for this way, the 9N is older 1939- 1941 the 8N is newer 1947-1952, whichever one seems to be the least abused or neglected is the better option, the less work you'd have to do the better off you'd be. I know from experience fixing tractors that have seen years of neglect is no fun unless you dig that kinda thing and it makes your wallet scream unless you have the money. whichever one you go for ask them to start it for you if you want to ask them, and listen if the engine runs good. if they say it don't run. well you might have some work ahead of you.

I started with a 2N that my father left me. It ran nice and I enjoyed using it.
But I wanted the real drawbar, position control and brake pedals that the 8Ns had so I sold the 2N and bought an 8N.
Boy was I disappointed.
The 8Ns had the dumbest, Fastest reverse speed Ever and I wished I hadn't sold the 2n.
So I sold the 8N soon after and bought a Ford 2000.
If I were to choose between the two Ns today it would be an 8N but it would absolutely, positively have a Sherman combo in it.

The 8n I’m looking at has the sherman
 
sherman could be very helpful but remember it is NOT a howard, your PTO speed is reduced when your drive speed is reduced, if drive speed increases so does PTO speed, you don't want to go too fast, this is because the Sherman slows the engines output to the transmission.

The other thing you have to take into account is does the Sherman function or is it broken, I doubt it would be broken but there's always a 0.0000000001% in every situation.
 
Same here, I do 57 miles one way to work
I commuted that far and more many days, but I didn't call it local, about 25 is local max to me. To commute or stay somewhere was more a case of project work hours and cost of getting a room compared to commute time and expense.
