Which starter?

I have a Ford 860, serial number 310609 which tells me I have a 58-59' tractor with a 172 engine. My starter went out and I would appreciate it if someone would double check the part I'm about to order.

I need the whole starter not just the motor, and there are two options. I'm fairly certain I need the one that cost $119. Also of note my electrical is upgraded to 12v.

Thank you!

Here are the serial number listings from this site. I don't see anything close to the number you posted.

Where did you get that Number from? It looks like a Part number that is cast in a Housing
Look at the Top of the Transmission on the Left side Near where the starter is The Sn. for the Tracter would be Punch /Stamped there

I got the original number from below the distributer. The actual is 17133. So it looks like that puts is as a 55'.

Yes, Thank you. So, do you have an opinion on which starter I should get?
All 800 and 801 tractors were equipped with the 172 engine. I don't know if they had different starters or not. Have you decided for sure if it is a 1955 860 or a 1958 861? the serial number fits either year.

It's an 860 per the stamp.

I ordered the Starter Ford Style DD with Drive (3115) Item #: 112209. I went to start it today and it wouldn't engage. Is this just a failure of the gear, or do you think something else going on? I've included a picture of the starter that I replaced.

From looking at the picture it looks like the Bendix did not make square contact to the flywheel Did you have a problem when you installed it. The Bendix should have been all the way to the end of the shaft when you put it in. The Starter should fit nice and Flat and not have to be pulled in by the bolts. When the starter starts to turn it spins the bendix to the flywheel.
The Engine is not Stuck is it?

It seemed to go in fine when I installed it. I've used it all year. To my knowledge the engine is not stuck, I ran it yesterday. Though, for the last several times I've started it, it sounded like the starter wasn't fully engaging the flywheel.

I used to just have the starters rebuilt.

Probably a dumb question, but was it someone local, or who specifically? Looking at the parts page, it looks like I don't have the option to buy the parts separate from the whole starter.

Local auto electric rebuilder.

Correct starter for 53 thru 64 models 4 cylinder engines. 134, 172 and 192 CID. From Yesterday's Tractor Parts. # 112209 Ref-C3NF11002D. By your problem description i think you should also inspect the ring gear teeth on your flywheel.

Sure looks to me like the gear on your new one is broken.
