White 2-85, checking over under fluid

He could be correct as I’m sure I checked mine both ways , the rear seal leaks on mine so that might be why I said that. I don’t remember how much difference there was as I have not used it for a couple years. I know I was checking if before starting the the tractor to see if I had to add oil.

This would be my take on it. Automatic transmissions have torque converters. The over under doesn’t have a converter. The oil level in an automatic transmission is set with the torque converter full. The engine needs to be running for the pump to fill the converter. As an example I don’t think Chrysler Torqueflites circulated the oil in park that is why they said on the dipstick to check them in neutral.
 
I had mine apart and as far as I could tell if you fill when not running it still had lots of oil to do what it should do while running. Seems to me if running it would be splashing on the dip stick and could not get an accurate reading. Been a few years since then but that is what my memory ( poor as it is) remembers
