white 5100 planter

I bought a white 5100 13 row splitter planter on auction time last week. It will be only used for beans but has corn meters with it. Flying Belgian commented on another post that I would like it for beans. So can someone with experience tell me about them? I currently use a 16 row kinze for beans.

I can't help you with beans. After the old JD494A runner planter, my first disc opener planter was a White 5100, which someone had used the best life out of already. When it came time to replace it, I had the money to go new. I wanted a 6100, but the dealers were now 2 hours away. I gave in and bought a JD vacuum. The White, air pressure, holding the seed to the plate, with no seals, is the simplest thing going. I'd store it with the plates off, so the air cut off brushes wouldn't be flattened. I never used talc. Never had a problem.

I don't know what I can tell you except like Bob said, they are a simple planter. I had two of them over the years and planted thousands of acres with them. Only had one problem that I can think of and that was a bearing went out of one of the marker disks. Both mine were 6-row. I traded the last one for a 12 row Kinze. Only reason I did not get another White is because--though they are a excellent planter of beans, they are a poor planter for acuracy in corn. You can get them to plant perfect in corn if you want to adjust air pressure every round. With beans, no matter. Just set the pressure where ever you want and they will plant exactly the pop. you set them for. I plant seed plots every year for local dealer. About 15 varieties each of corn and beans. So I welded a hand wheel on each seed disk mount bolt as each disk had to come off to clean boxes between different varieties. I didn't want to screw around with a wrench. Made it handy end of season because like Bob said, you have to remove them end of season. Oh another thing and Bob eluded to this as well. Unless you can tell the cutoff brushes are not worn at all, go ahead and change them. They don't cost much and not that bad of job to change. Will give you peace of mind. When I got my first 5100 and could not get it to plant corn pop. right, I thought maybe my brushes were worn out. So I replaced them thinking that might be the problem. It was not but I felt better with new brushes. I've had my Kinze for four years now so my memory is a little foggy on the 5100. Hope this helps.

I bought a 6100 with splitter 2 years ago and really like it. All you need are a set of 852433 soybean seed discs and you are ready to go. Check (and keep an eye on) the bolts and U-bolts holding the lift assist wheel to the frame. They have a lot of pressure on them and do break if you have a lot of terraces and waterways. I have used a 5100 to plant corn for years and am very pleased with my spacing and population. Just tweak the pressure when you change size of seed and go.
