Who assembled the plows

Were the drag plows assembled in the factory and then painted or were they shipped in a box to the dealer and then assembled? If so were the bolts plain black in a new plow.?
Putting my no57 three tens back together.
Also how we're the labels put on, a simple stencil or something like a screen print?

I can't speak for older plows but the ones JD shipped in the 60's-80's all came in pieces. I put many Surflex's,tandem disks,moldboards and disk breaking plows together when I worked for a JD dealer. I unloaded the parts out of a RR boxcar.

A lot of owners manuals had assembly instructions in them, would tell what was in each bundle or what was already assembled. Find an owners manual.

In the 30s and 40 and probably the 50s the plows
came in bundles, wired together. Bolts were often
in a cloth or burlap bag and had been painted,
maybe dipped, because they were often stuck
together with paint. I got this first hand info
from and old man who had his fathers dealership and
did much of the repair and assembly himself. I
think the silk screening was done at the factory.

Bob, You have it correct. I watched an uncle (employed by a JD dealer) assemble and deliver JD equipment in the 1950s and many implements, besides plows, came not assembled or partially assembled.

The boxcars that the plows, disks, and planters were shipped in usually had pools of green partially dried paint on the floor. We thought the machinery was probably dipped just before loading.

Guess I will try the dipping method but let the bolts dry on a screen before assembly.
I wonder if FITs electrolysis program would put a usefull coating on the bolts before painting. All bolts will go through the blast cabinet.
