Just a little reminder to watch where you step.
This rattler 16 with the button was in the a backyard
of a home in south west
South Carolina east of Augusta Ga.

don't show that to much I think they are protected.

I wouldn't accuse South Carolina of being a northern state! :)

"Conservation Status: Timber and canebrake rattlesnakes are not protected in the southern states and the species is not considered to be in serious danger, but populations are steadily decreasing over the geographic range, primarily due to habitat destruction and other human activities. In some areas of the northeast timber rattlesnakes have declined dramatically and they are protected in several northern states.

They are serious. Eat it, they are fine dining. I used a shovel to kill one 12 inches from a 70 year old woman's ankle. I had her hold still and not look down. Snick. It was only 20 inches long, but she had low top shoes. Jim

Nice! If they wag their tail, it means they are happy and want to be petted!

Confirm or deny, I've heard a couple people, hunters, say that if there are hogs in the area, rattlers don't rattle! Hogs hear it, and will eat the snake! True or false?

My neighbor was bit by a prairie ratttler and died, but he was pretty old. My big lab got bit and his head swelled up as big as a basketball. I thought sure he would die, but he finally pulled thru. I've killed three on my place. One was just a baby, thin and not very long. These snakes here are not as big or long as that one. I wonder how long they live; looks like that one is 16. That's the most rattles I have ever seen.

Don't want to argue but all the timber ones around here have a lot more black., always look like they had been dropped down a stove pipe. Never see any that colorful. Tennessee

16 rattles does not indicate age.
If they are healthy and eating well, they will grow faster and shed skin. Often times two or three times a year especially when young.
When they shed is when they get another rattle.

Plus the more rattles they have, the more likely they have also lost some off the end.
The first one is cone shaped and if they lost it or more the end is like a ball socket ball.

how do you tell the difference between a timber rattler and a canebrake? i looked at pictures and couldnt see a difference.
