Why is my battery flip flopped

Hi Guys,

This continues from my wiring question yesterday. Bruce helped me out, thanks Bruce.

I was redoing my wiring and noticed the negative terminal is wired back to the starter cut out/assembly and the positive terminal on the battery is hooked up to the ground?

Why would this be? Is it OK? The cable fittings don't even fit if I wanted to switch it back.

Just wondering why it would be like that, and if I need to be concerned about it when I'm done rewiring...

Is a positive ground system. You only need to be concerned about it if you try to reverse it. About half of the vehicles made prior to 1950 had positive ground systems. Positive or negative ground doesn't matter as long as you observe the same polarity in the system.

Interesting,

As I read some past posts people were mentioning re-polarizing the generator cut out. Does that need to be done when you remove the battery and rewire, or does that need to be done only if you install a new one? I ask because I had my tractor running for a while yesterday and the battery did not seem to charge. When I went to start it today the battery had hardly any charge. It would only start with a jump start. (I jump start according to the instructions in the 50 tips)

it would be most helpfull if you would mention what machine you are actually working on.

I read about 400 emails per day.. at the end of the day.. I have no idea who owns what tractor.. even if i talked to you 5 minutes ago.

a 9n/n uses a cutout.. it never hurts to repolerize.. jump from either side of the cutout over to the other side. is the genny 3rd brush adjusted up.. is the ammeter good? ( show negative deflection with ignition on and points closed.. or with lamps on?

Sound guy,

Good point. Since I was adding this to some questions yesterday I did not think to say what year etc. For your reference it's a 1942 9N 6volt front mount.

I read more posts and figured out how to re-polarize from a posting from Dell a while back..

Thanks,
