Growing up on the farm we had a ground driven John Deere manure spreader. Think it was a L model. Some identifying marks were. The floor and apron chain handles swung in an arc to the side, not up and down. It had a auger flighting for the spreader action instead of paddles like most manure spreaders do. Anyways. We bought it out of a fence row, I rebuilt it with locust lumber we sawed and put it to use. Was a very good unit. Mom sold the farm in 2006 and the spreader went to a local auction lot and got sold. Lost track of it as I was living out of state then. Anyways. Been on the look for one just like it. Friday a week ago a neighbor down the road several miles came over and in conversation with him I learned he was scrapping a JD spreader. I asked him some questions about the spreader to learn IF it was the one we had. Yes it had the auger flighting, he bought it 20/30 years ago at a local auction, etc. At this point I was very interested and told him several times I was, and that i wanted to look at it Monday of this week when I looked at the tractor he was selling. Monday comes I go over and look at the tractor then asked about the spreader. " Oh i scrapped it this morning"!!! What??? Scrap is 8.50 a hundred so he didn't make a hundred bucks, and I would have paid several hundred if it was the one we had!! I will never understand why some people will do crazy stuff like that when they can make twice as much selling it to somebody!! I realize it wasn't mine and he was free to do it but...... Why???

To get a good check right now instead of waiting for somebody MAYBE to show up, then act like they own a pawn shop and you brought it to them because you need way less than you want for it.

Since all of those pawn shows came on, I won't even try to sell anything anymore. Everybody acts like they're doing you a huge favor by offering you a third what you're asking. Show up in an old junk car, wearing sweat pants, won't get off their phone and talk to you. Come and knock on the door with cash in your hand when you want to talk. I'm not wasting my time standing here.

I would but this yard won't sell anything once it crosses the scales. btdt. On top of that they probably squeezed it with the claw ,threw it on the pile and damaged it.

I understand what your saying. But I had a cash offer that netted him more then the yard did and he wouldn't have even had to haul it.

You posted that on Friday a week ago you told him you wanted to look at it, not that you gave him a cash offer higher than scrap. I am guessing if you had given him the offer then you might have it now, or he might have held off on sending it until you looked at it on Monday. He apparently decided to send it rather than wait and take a chance you wouldn't want it. Too bad for both of you, but he made his choice and netted what he would have if you didn't decide to take it.

No sir I was not a looker. I told him friday I would pay him cash after I looked at it monday , If it was the one we had when I came to look at the tractor. Told him that several times. He was fine with waiting till monday. If I told you I would pay cash when I learned you had what I wanted , how does that make me a looker ??? Sometimes schedules don't allow dropping everything this second when you run a repair shop.

It sounds like the owner was not ready to sell when the OP stopped at his place. No way would I leave cash unless the spreader was coming home with me right then and there. How would the OP have proof of leaving cash if the would seller did not make out some type of receipt for the money?

Today might be your lucky day. I was over at the area auction yard today and there is a John Deere Model L ground drive manure spreader that appears to be in good condition. The auctioneer is Jay Martin Auctions in Waterloo, NY and the lot number is 2808.

A few $100 bills as a deposit to hold it for you will get people's attention, a vague statement does not. It might already have been sold to the scrapper before you first found out about it.
