Will not fire while cranking

Got a 8N, front dist, that has been converterd to 12V. Been having some issues here lately and during my trouble shooting - I removed a spark plug from a cylinder, put the boot back on, made sure th plug had contact with the block and cranked it. There was no spark during cranking, but would spark after i got off the starter.
Come to think of it, this is how my 8n has always been. It doesnt fire up during cranking, but as soon as you let off the starter button it would fire right up.
Any ideas?

Well first off does it still have the factory starting button?? If it does then your starter is probably pulling to many amps so there is nothing left for the spark. Now if you have some sort of key type start set up then the switch maybe wired so no power to the coil when in the start position.

cfishman........uh? theres lottza reasons for no sparkies when crankin' the engine. From being miss-wired to BAD battery clamps (internally corroded) ...or... low battery charge ...or... miss-wired "infamous ballast resistor". Seriously, the N-electrical system is quite simplistic but confusing to neubie shadetree mechanics. Remember the 6-volt MANTRA: "keep'em clean, brite'n'tite" and don't be fer using them wimpy ferrin' 12V battery cables. Use 'arrychested 'muricum dubble-ought (00) thick as yer thumb battery cables. .......Dell, the electrician

Thanks for your advice guys, still looking into this.
Took the battery and had it tested, its ok. So while I was in town, I bought new battery cables. Did get the tractor to run for about 5 minutes then it quit, unable to restart. have read some "wont start when warm" issues here on the board - checking into that.
Well now the starter will not work, solenoid clicks but starter wont turn. on multimeter - solenoid is ok, however no continiuity from starter cable to the starter cable bolt on the starter. The cable end that is bolted to the starter has coninuity, but no continuity from that end to the bolt itself=????

Have found wiring diagram on this board of 12v conversion - I think my wiring is screwed up.
