What should the tonage be on a winch to pull a truck, Or a tractor or what ever onto a 20,000# trailer with ramps.
Harbor F has some that are 1300# & 5500#.

I have quite a few come-alongs that are slightly sprung and have broken wire rope in the 1,300 pound range, so I wouldn"t consider a 1,300 pound winch to be very good to pull a truck. I would want the winch to have about twice the capacity of what I"m trying to pull. You may be pulling the truck while it"s sinking in mud or sand, and you"ll be pulling the truck up a ramp onto a trailer. The truck may have low tire pressure giving it more resistance. Remember to stand back by the amount of wire rope you have extended, or a little more. If it snaps, it"s a whip.

I talked to one guy that said he used a 8000# electric cause he had some tractors that the wheels dont go around, So you have to drag them on to the trailer.
He said a 10000# would be the best. Would it take that much?
I looked at one at Harber & there $400. + tax.
Would like your input on this.

I would agree with the 10,000 pounds, and if you could afford it go bigger. I was picking up a C60 Chevy truck to take to the junk yard, and the brakes were frozen on, and it wouldn't budge. By the way, this truck was able to pull a school bus over chocks, so there was a lot of resistence. I had to leave it for someone with much larger equipment. When the wheels are stopped it's meant to stop it, and you will have to overcome the resistence. I was pulling a forklift setting in sand once with the same truck, a C3500 GMC I used a new grade 7, 5/16 chain, and snapped it and stretched every link in the chain so thay looked like figure eights. Look at the winches wreckers use, they regularly pull damaged cars that are not rolling, and are digging into pavement and dirt. They sell winches and all wrecker supplies at http://www.awdirect.com

I just remembered something about Harbor Freight. They are very slow on repair parts, up to 6 months. I had to wait for a spot welder switch to come from Yugoslavia. I had to wait about 6 months, too for a motor for a metal band saw. I thought to look in the gear case on the band saw while waiting for the motor, and it was dry. I have a chain saw sharpener that's good, and a good bearing race driver. I have a bead breaker that had too small bolts and let the breaker spring out of alignment, I put the correct size bolts in it and it worked better, but is still a little springy. They do work good for consumable products, and I'm looking over a sand blast cabinet to see if wear parts (nozzle and gloves) are available locally, the steel cabinet will last as long as something else more expensive.

we use a 12000 warn on a 10 ton belshe dove tail and it will pull a truck or even 580 backhoe easily. one time i had to double the line with a pully to pull a 7000 lb tractor that had flats and locked wheels..i think non rolling usually doubles the resistance.. i wouldnt waste money on a harbor freight winch unless you dont mind replacing it in a year or less..

I haul crap out of the weeds all the time, you can never have to big of a winch!! the electric ones suck, I agree with the wrecker winch. there cap. is way under rated, because they are used to lift cars and trucks off the ground

I was thinking of a 8500 Lb Super winch.
They have a 5/16 pull cable. They are sold by Northern tool, The old Northern Hyd. I think.
Around $400.00.
