winter tire chains

I"ve got a 1968 Ford 5000 with a fresh set of turf tires on the rears. Because my driveway has a significant hill, in years past tire chains were necessary on my 640 to get back up the hill after plowing.

Does anyone have a recommendation on what kind of tire chains to buy? There are highway chains that seem to be the ladder type and then there are other types that seem to have a more aggressive bite. My driveway is asphalt so I don"t want to damage it.

With the turfs you don't need to worry about the ladder style getting down between the lugs like they can on R-1 tires. Ladders are cheapest to buy, and probably would work fine for you.

Ladder type chains will work well on your turf tires and are considerably less expensive than are double link or X types.

I'll agree with everyone else...ladder chains and turf tires are a great combo for hardpack snow and ice. Our winter plow tractor, a '75 2000 ex-USAF Air Nat'l Guard tug, will push snow uphill no problem (most times). Weighted tires would obviously give even more bite.

I agree on the ladder type for turf. I also agree that they are not as useful on R-1's. I got new tires last year and now the chains fall in between the lugs except for about every fourth one. Not much bite. Any suggestions for modification short of buying the other style?
