winterizing

Can anyone offer some good advice on winterizing my 9N? It is
stored in a run-in shed for the winter but will be partially exposed
to the weather elements. Should I drain the water and add some
antifreeze or keep it empty? Does the battery need to come out?
What else is necessary to winterize and aid in making it easier to
start in the spring. Any tips will be appreciated.
Thanks

Put a float charger on the battery or remove the battery & keep it indoors. Fill up the gas tank w/ fresh gas & Sta-Bil. (Some folks let the carb run dry; I don't, because I do not want a rusty bowl or dried out gaskets.) Remove the plugs, put a tablespoon of oil in the cylinders. Block the clutch. Check tire pressure & add air if needed. Put it on blocks or jack stands to keep the tires off of the ground. Change the oil & lube it. Make sure the hydraulic fluid doesn't have water in it. Check the anti-freeze; use 50/50 anti-freeze & distilled water. If the tractor is not kept in a shed or garage, I don't think putting a tarp over it gets you much. A car cover, which supposedly does not retain moisture, would be a better idea.

Put anti-freeze in the system no matter how you do it. This keeps corrosion to a minimum and boosts the efficiency of cooling. Yes I live in a cold climate but it astounds me how many times there is a posting on the site by guys who don"t use anti-freeze and realize that they have a cracked block after a cold spell.

Full tank, stabil, pull the battery and bring it indoors, oil in the cylinders and turn it over a few times to coat the walls. I like the tip about plugging the exhaust pipe and blocking the clutch.

You really should wait a lot longer so you are out in the cold freezing while you are working on the tractor. That"s how I have done it over the years (slow learner).

I'm curious to know why you would put the "N" in the barn for the winter? Where do ya live, and what better tractor do you have to clear the driveway?

Mutt,

P.S. post some pictures of your tractor when you get the chance.
