Wire gauges

I'm rewiring my old 8N which was converted to 12V at some point in the past. With the help of folks here I located JMOR's excellent wiring diagrams however there is not note of what gauges that should be used. I'm wondering if the color code indicates gages or circuits.

I have attached a link to a diagram. I'm at a loss and any help will be greatly appreciated.[/b:676b809fb9]

I like to be on the over-doing-it side of the spec. So I use 14 gauge wire for all circuits except the wire from the alternator output to the junction block on the dash board. That needs to be #10 or heavier depending on the size of your alternator. Then use the same gauge wire to the amp meter and then to the hot terminal on the starter solenoid.

Thanks swpaguy. I had found that one but some of the wires are not marked. Such as the wiring to the lamps, and a couple of other ones. I think that may be for the original 6V as well.

Paul, do you use 14G where picture indicates to use 12G?

If the tractor is 12 volted (as evidenced by the alternator) then the circuits take approx only 1/2 the number of amps that the 6V system carried through the wires. So YES, I do use #14 in the places shown to be 12 gauge. #14 is rated to carry 15 amps for a much greater distance than any wire on the N. You might get up to 15 amps on the headlight circuit if you have added additional lights (maybe towards the rear). My favorite N has been wired this way for 40+ years and it works fine.

Besides, I only have to have one gauge of wire in stock for when I do other N conversions.

I just noticed that my alternator has more than one wire running to it but none of the JMOR diagrams show anything like that. Does anyone know of a diagram that would show such a schematic? Thanks
