Wiring Alternator

Want to put an alternator in place of a generator on a JD 4010. How is it wired and do you use the voltage regulator that is now tied to the generator. I saw one on a 4010 but could not tell how it was wired in.
Tractor is still 24 volt.

What kind of alternator?

Certain ones MAY have the regulator built in.

If you are using a 24-Volt Motorola, as the later 24-Volt Deeres used, the matching regulator will be mounted to be back of tha alternator OR to a bracket nearby.

In ANY case, the tractor's existing regulator that is left from it's generator will NOT be usable with ANY common alternator.

I have a copy of ..Up dating the charger system on your old tractor. It is saved in .doc format.
with pictures. I believe it is small enough to send in email. Write me if you want me to send it to you. Use in subject area.. want charge system ,, so I don't dump it first.

Microsoft word ..works great for it and pictures it has. If for some reason it does not go cause of size. I would split it and send in two emails.

I got a 100amp 12 volt single pole alternator at Jegs for $84.oo and installed it on a J.D. Model 40-w. It has a built in regulator. All I had to do was hook up one wire from the alternator to any positive terminal. I used number 10 wire and hooked it to the starter terminal. I realize this is a lot smaller tractor but the principal should be the same. I hope this helps. Happy New Year..............RW

You need a 24V isolated from chassis alternator. A standard chassis return alternator will make smoke.
The alternator has to have a large + terminal and a large - terminal running charging current to the batteries.
