Have wired my side mount 8n tractor 52 model. Had a diagram for 52 model, wired it like this,#1 from alt.with dio to bottom of j.box,ign side of switch,+ from v. meter,+ from coil with resister to bottom of j. box. top of j.box, battery side of switch,big post of alt.,& lights to top of j. box. Can"t get it to crank,what do I need to do?

Does the engine turn over (crank) and not start? The term "crank" means different things to different people.

What you have described has nothing to do w/ the starting circuit.

And, I'll assume it's a 12v conversion......very few sidemount coils require a resistor. Does yours?

Yes it is 12 volts,has been changed over about 5 yeard,I am restoring it and wanted it to be wired correct,it will turn over but not crank,this side mount dist. does require a resister.The way I said is the way the wiring diagram calls for except the #2 wire,I can't tell what side on switch goes where.Can anyone help?

Hard to be sure I am following you, but if you mean #2 terminal on alternator, just connect it to the alternator's large output stud. I will not influence the starting of the engine, however. Got any sparking at contacts as points open& close during cranking?

Will.......so you re-wired a working 12v-conversion according to some internet wiring diagram you found because you didn't like the sloppy wiring? And now it won't start? (crank) Does that tell you something???

In a 3-wire conversion, the #2 slide-on terminal is connected by 3-in of wire to the alternators BIG STUD output. Simple, eh?

#1 from alt.with dio to bottom of j.box,ign side of switch,.....the #1 slide-on terminal is connected by DIODE to the bottom of "junction.box" (whats a junction box? 2-terminal block, maybe?) ignition side of switch. (ON side of ignition switch???)

+ from v. meter,+ from coil with resister to bottom of j. box......uh, "+ from v. meter" (ammeter???)......"+ from coil with resister" to BOTTOM of junction.box .......which you seem have established as ignition switch ON. (this works)

top of j.box, battery side of switch,big post of alt.,& lights to top of j. box......uh, TOP of junction.box is connected to battery side of ignition switch; (that is good and correct) big post of alternator (to battery terminal of j.box) is good and correct; "& lights to top of j.box" (that would be the BATTERY connection) is good and correct.

The ONLY thing I find "wrong" with yer wiring description is......"ign side of switch,+ from v. meter".......the + from v.meter (ammeter) needs to be connected to the j.box TOP terminal otherwize you will NEVER CHARGE yer 12v battery. Understand??? .......Dell a 12v advocate for the right reason. I know 8-ways that work and a gazillion ways that don't work

Got it running but can't get lights to work, had them wired to bottom of the terminal block, does the switch have to be grounded, I have a pull and push switch with a fuse on top with two post, I had the battery side of switch to bottom of terminal block and the other wire going to lights, they would not work, what do I need to do? I know the switch works, cchecked it with meter. Thanks for all your help.

Sounds like the lights do not have a good ground. I wired both of my 8's with a return wire from the lights to ground - that old sheet metal doesn't always make for a good ground.

How would i get a good ground, the switch only has to post, one is battery and other one goes to lights.

koenton.......would it surprize you to learn the INSIDE yer headlite bucket, one of the headlite terminals is connected by slide terminal to rusty ground??? To correctly ground yer headlite, fish a new wire thru the hollow bolt that hold the buckett on. Properly terminate the new insulated ground wire with slip-on terminal on the headlite ground terminal. (other terminal is connected to yer headlite ON switch) ...then... terminate the OTHER END with a ring-lug terminal to convenient engine bolt with a STAR washer for a good ground. Simple, eh? Repeat for other headlite. Simpler too, eh? .......respectfully, Dell
