Wiring regulator

Had my generator rebuilt, mechanic stated i would need a new regulator as the generator had spun all the solder out.
I orded a new regulator from Just 8n. The instructions states wire it like the old one,the old one is not labeled field, Batt, etc. but the new one has all the connections on top and are labled.
The old regulator has two wires to the top, one on left side looking at the regulator from the front and one wire on right side.
Should there be continuity from the three wires on the generator to all three to the regulator. The old wires are not color coded.
I have the regulator off and i get continuity from any of three of the wires at the regulator and to any of the two wires on the generator. Dont seem right to me
Thanks

I guess your wires from the gen are field and armature. The reg has field, arm, ground and batt. Yes on the continuity. Batt is the output to your battery, gauge, coil, whatever. Ground is to frame. Was there something wrong with the old reg?

This ought to fix you up. The 4th wire that you mentioned was under a mounting bolt, to ground the regulator (G, blk/red shown on diagram).

take all the wires loose.. THEN check for continuity.. then you won't be getting any readings THRU the genny / reg..

Remove the wires, and trace one at a time.. that way you will know what single wire is for the field, then the armature.. etc.

leaving them hooked up you will get readings from one wire to another due to brushes and regulator contacts.
